South Korean Military Accidentally Bombs Civilian Village, Injuring 15
In a recent incident during joint military exercises near the North Korean border, two South Korean KF-16 fighter jets mistakenly dropped eight 500-pound MK-82 bombs on the civilian village of Nogok-ri in Pocheon, resulting in 15 injuries, including three serious cases. The bombs, intended for the Seungjin training ground, were released due to incorrect coordinates entered by the pilot.
The bombing caused significant damage to several buildings, including homes, a Catholic church, and a greenhouse. Eyewitnesses reported widespread destruction, with water pipes bursting and vehicles damaged.
In response, local authorities, including Pocheon’s mayor, have called for a suspension of all military exercises until comprehensive safety measures are reassessed. The South Korean Air Force expressed deep regret over the incident and initiated an investigation to prevent future occurrences.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety protocols of military exercises, especially in areas near civilian populations. As investigations continue, both the South Korean and U.S. military are working together to review and enhance safety measures to ensure such accidents do not recur.
